Abstract: | The author has made a selection of some of the appropriate technologies being practised by students in the horticultural programme of Gambia College. These new techniques are not being practised in the rural areas of The Gambia and could therefore be adopted and practised in nonformal education gardening programmes in order to improve gardening practices and increase vegetable and fruit tree production. The following technologies are examined: the construction of various types of fencing for gardening; the production of seedlings in the nursery (building a nursery shed, constructing a seedbox); making manure (compost/liquid); plant propagation techniques (budding and grafting); and the control of Bacteria Wilt by soil sterilization. This survey is followed by a critical assessment of the adequacy of the technologies used in the programme, and proposals for furthering the application of technology in nonformal education programmes in The Gambia.
