Abstract:This collective volume focuses on animal husbandry through the lens of culture and economics. Covering five continents, the contributions are divided into three sections. Section 1 (Pastoralism of the plains) contains two contributions on Africa: Markets and migration: a Fulbe pastoral system in Mali, by John Aron Grayzel; Cattle, culture, and economy: dynamics in East African pastoralism, by Louise Sperling and John G. Galaty (dealing in particular with the Maasai and Samburu of Kenya). Section 2 (Pastoralism of the desert and tundra) also contains two contributions on Africa: Dates, dromedaries, and drought: diversification in Tuareg pastoral systems, by Edmond Bernus; Water, land, and livestock: the evolution of tenure and administration patterns in the grazing areas of Botswana, by Robert K. Hitchcock (dealing in particular with the Bamangwato). Section 3 (Mountain pastoralism) contains one contribution on Africa: Adaptation and intensification in the pastoral systems of Morocco, by Abdellatif Bencherifa and Douglas L. Johnson (dealing with the Laarab, Lagsar, Massat and Ait Arfa).
