| Abstract: | Spanning the last fifty years or so, this is a detailed study of the Rastafari movement which to date is the foremost Pan-African and Pan-Caribbean political force in the Caribbean. The author traces the background to and origins of Rasta and its meaning as a resistance movement of black people against the exploitative capitalist system from the era of Marcus Garvey through to the recent contribution of Walter Rodney in the black man's struggle for liberation. The Rasta challenge is therefore posed not only to the Caribbean but to the whole Western world, forcing it to come to terms with the history of slavery, the reality of white racism and the indefatigable thrust of black people for dignity and self-respect. |
