Abstract: | Thomas Pringle lived in South Africa from 1820 to 1826. He is known to many South Africans as a campaigner for freedom of the press. This book is a reproduction of the texts, in their original order, of Pringle's 'Poems illustrative of South Africa', part 1 of 'African sketches' (1834). A textual history of each poem and other editorial comments as well as Pringle's own explanatory notes to his poems, have been included in this edition. An appendix shows a few examples of Pringle's Scottish poetry, written before 1820. |
