Abstract: | Little is known about the psychodynamics and psychotherapy of venereophobia in African countries. The authors therefore examined 51 cases, referred for the first time to a sexually transmitted diseases clinic in Nigeria. Almost all patients in the sample were young, male, and single. Of the 51 cases, 23 were diagnosed as venereophobic. The health seeking behaviour at first consultation was ranked as follows: self-medication, private physician, quack physician. The authors conclude that venereophobia can be interpreted as a sexual phobia and in some cases as a sex value conflict. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French. |
