Abstract: | This article tracks the external relations of the Maghreb countries (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) through an analysis of each country's macroeconomic conditions and the evolution of the balance of payments during the period 1977-1986. The global economic evolution of each State is reviewed in terms of economic growth, employment opportunities in the different sectors of the economy, and structural changes in these sectors. The balance of payments is analysed in terms of trade, financing and external debt. The continuing dilemma the Maghreb States face is whether to devote available foreign exchange reserves to domestic investment or to the retirement of past debts. The external position of these countries will continue to weaken as long as the burden of external debt continues to grow. This in turn will have a negative impact on their capital formation and economic growth. Ref. |
