Abstract: | The papers in this book were presented at a conference on small towns and rural-urban interaction in Africa, held in Uppsala and Enköping in 1989. They address a wide range of issues relating to the small town in a rural context from both the macro perspective, including the role of the State, to the micro perspective, where attention is given to the vitality and adaptability of individual actors through their utilization of rural and urban opportunities. The papers are arranged under four headings: Planning for small urban centres in the national context (contributions by R. Silitshena, R.A. Obudho and G.O. Aduwo, and Layi Egunjobi); Economic networks, small enterprises and entrepreneurship (contributions by P.O. Pedersen, J. Rasmussen, K.H. Wekwete); Urban-rural linkages, opportunities and survival strategies (contributions by A.H. af Ornäs, J. Andreasen, M. Vaa, A. Schlyter, and Tade Akin Aina); and The constraints and distortions imposed by State policies (contributions by J. Baker, J. Gould and G. Mickels, and Adil Mustafa Ahmad and Mohamed El Hadi Abu Sin). Case studies are drawn from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe. |
