Abstract: | This paper formulates a theoretical framework for the study of refugee integration in developing countries. It is inspired by field research on Eritrean refugees in the region of Kassala (Sudan) in which the author participated. A preliminary model for integration is designed, specifying different dimensions of integration and the factors that influence it, which include characteristics of the refugees themselves, factors related to the flight process, characteristics of the region of settlement, and policies related to refugees. For a more detailed picture, the author develops a more specific and operational model for one dimension of integration, viz. the economic dimension. The following criteria for assessing the economic dimension of integration are proposed: participation in the economy, income, and access to non-income goods and services. |
