| Abstract: | Although a number of schools in Zimbabwe receive funds for the provision of physical facilities from nongovernmental organizations, for the majority of rural primary schools teacher accommodation, classrooms and classroom furniture are inadequate. This study examines the impact of the provision of physical facilities on the dropout rate and the teacher turnover rate in rural Zimbabwe. It also examines whether this impact differs significantly for funded and unfunded rural primary schools. Questionnaires were sent to the headmasters of 177 funded schools and 154 unfunded schools which were randomly selected. An analysis of the results shows that the provision of adequate physical facilities has an impact on both the teacher turnover rate and the pupil dropout rate. The major factor influencing the dropout rate in these schools is building funds. Pupils whose parents fail to pay building funds are excluded from attending classes. Teacher accommodation is the major factor influencing teacher turnover and the number of trained teachers. The results also show that the dropout rate and the teacher turnover rate in funded primary schools are lower than in unfunded primary schools, while the number of trained teachers is higher in funded schools.
