Abstract:This paper focuses on the education and prospects for employment of the blind in Zimbabwe between 1981 and 1987. The education of the blind in Zimbabwe has been a joint effort of the government and the Council for the Blind. The Council for the Blind has, firstly, transcribed school textbooks and final examination questions into braille. Secondly, it encourages school authorities to accept the idea of the integration of blind and sighted pupils in their schools. Thirdly, it has formed a partnership with the school authorities, especially in the building of resource centres for blind students. Fourthly, it has launched a sponsorship scheme whereby individuals or groups are requested to sponsor the education of blind children. The government, for its part, has launched a national training programme for specialist teachers of the blind and organized vacation courses for these teachers. It pays their salaries in full, it provides grants to the Council for the Blind, and it actively promotes the integrated education of blind and sighted pupils. As a result of these efforts, the enrolment of blind students has increased since 1981. However, blind primary and secondary school leavers still face an enormous task in finding gainful employment.
