Abstract: | This paper analyses the structure of greeting sequences in Yoruba and the sociocultural factors that might account for that structuring. Data were collected in Ile-Ife, Akure and Abeokuta, Nigeria. The analysis shows that greeting among the Yoruba is more than a normal routine meant for the establishment of interpersonal relations or social contacts. It is also a serious business of topic introduction and development, since it involves knowing about the person being greeted, her or his family, property, job and relations. The paper suggests that the type and organization of Yoruba greetings are influenced by sociological factors such as age, sex, status and occupation of the participants. Examples of various types of Yoruba greetings have been included. Bibliogr., notes. |
