Abstract:In Nigeria, uncontrolled deforestation to meet human needs such as the need for wood and wood products, dwelling places, and food production, has led to increasing environmental degradation. This, in turn, has given rise to the frequent occurrence of ecological disasters such as erosion and continuing desert encroachment. This chain reaction has subsequently led to loss of soil fertility, reduction in agricultural output and adverse environmental influences. If attention is focused on the intensification of environmental forestry, this trend could be reversed. This paper highlights some strategies for promoting environmental forestry in Nigeria. To a great extent, intensification of the practice of agroforestry/private forestry to boost the production of wood/wood items, and the development of alternative sources of heat energy for domestic use (such as the use of improved wood stoves, kerosine, gas, biogas, solar energy, wind energy) will contribute immensely in achieving the objective. Moreover, providing basic education about forestry in schools, increasing the number of forestry extension workers, along with radio/television broadcasts to educate the people about environmental forestry, the establishment of demonstration plots around villages and the involvement of clubs and religious organizations in afforestation/conservation programmes will also play an important role in promoting environmental forestry in Nigeria.
