Abstract:To many observers of economic, social and political events in Africa, the 'challenge' means overcoming the crises (drought, famine, indebtedness, political instability, rapid growth in population, etc.) that have afflicted Africa. According to the author these crises constitute only a part of the African challenge, because the African challenge is also a challenge to existing knowledge in dealing with the kinds of problems facing Africa and is also, therefore, a challenge to the rest of the world. It is multidimensional, multisectoral, regional and international at the same time. This book is the author's contribution to the debate on this challenge. In addition to addressing the economic basis of the challenge, he deals with such vital aspects of the African crisis as mass unemployment, food shortages, sharp population increases and external indebtness. He suggests administrative and conceptual adjustments both at the local and at the international levels in making approaches to the solution of the crisis that involves the survival of millions of Africans as well as that of the African countries themselves.
