| Abstract: | The most significant innovation in the 1979 Constitution of Nigeria which ushered in the Second Republic was the creation of an executive presidency to provide the basis for American-style presidential politics. This article examines the character of the executive presidency, its constitutional antecedents and the historical and sociopolitical circumstances that motivated the choice in Nigeria. It also discusses the experience of this institution in the ill-fated Second Republic and shows how the New Constitution, while reinforcing the executive powers and responsibilities of the 1979 Constitution, nonetheless introduces certain innovations which tend to strengthen the institution of the presidency in tune with the political temperament of the current period.
