Abstract:This study examines the background, the structure and the prospects of the refugee wage-earning settlements in eastern and central Sudan. The viability of these settlements is to a large extent dependent on employment opportunities in the region in general and in the nearby irrigation schemes (New Halfa in the eastern region and Es Suki in the central region) in particular. What are the alternative economic activities on which the refugee families can allocate their labour? What is the rate of participation of the different segments of the refugee labour force in the different employment opportunities in the region, namely in the irrigation schemes? In the mechanized rainfed agricultural areas? In the nearby towns? What are the factors that determine their response to the different employment opportunities? What are the seasonal strategies adopted by the refugee families to ensure their survival? One of the main goals of establishing the wage-earning settlements was to enable the refugees to achieve self-reliance. How far have the settlements progressed towards such an end? What are the possible constraints? These are some of the main questions addressed in this study.
