| Abstract: | Aim of this paper is to contribute towards an objective analysis of acts of physical violence of a political nature or committed for political reasons, i.e. either to maintain the status quo or to bring about social change, in South Africa. The first step was to compile a directory of all such acts committed by all parties. The directory included acts causing damage, injury and death committed by insurgent and right-wing groups within South Africa, and acts committed by the South African Defence Force and Police against insurgent groups in South Africa and in neighbouring countries, excluding Namibia. The analysis concerns three periods: from January 1977 (the Soweto revolt) to 23 May 1983 (the Maputo raid); from 23 May 1983 to 16 March 1984 (the Nkomati Accord) and from 16 March 1984 to July 1984 (the date of the survey) and presents information on categories of violence; parties responsible; frequency of incidents; number of victims (injuries and deaths); soft vs hard targets; frequency of deaths against injuries; civilian victims; deliberate civilian victims.
