Abstract:The Mchinji District Physical Development Plan is one of three prototype plans prepared under the National Physical Development Plan Project of Malawi. The plan, which will have a multisectoral impact, deals with the spatial or physical planning aspect of social and economic development in the district of Mchinji. The plan consists of two parts. Part one contains the background studies which form the basis for the preparation of the plan. It gives an overview of the existing social, economic, and physical conditions in the district (geography; existing development plans, programmes and policies; natural resources and economic activities (agriculture, industry, tourism, employment); population (population growth, age/sex distribution, population movement); urbanization and service centres; physical infrastructure (transportation, electricity, water, health, education, postal services and telecommunications); and general land use and natural physical constraints). Part two presents the spatial or physical planning strategies and related policies which address the needs and issues identified in Part one.
