Abstract: | In recognition of the part played by health in national development, the Ministry of Education and Culture in Zimbabwe is promoting food and nutrition as one of the subjects of the curriculum in secondary schools. The teaching of this subject demands well-trained and dedicated teachers, who are prepared to keep abreast of new developments. This article presents the results of a survey of the qualifications of food and nutrition secondary school teachers in Zimbabwe. The article also assesses the type of professional guidance home economic teachers get from the Ministry of Education through visits by education officers and through in-service courses, and examines the adequacy of equipment used in the teaching of food and nutrition. The conclusion is that the majority of the teachers are inadequately prepared for the task. They have problems with the interpretation of the food and nutrition syllabi; in relating theory to practice; in catering for individual students and in completing course work in allocated time.
