Abstract: | The Interregional Meeting on River and Lake Basin Development, with emphasis on the African region, was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 10-15 October 1988. The meeting included an introductory session and four technical sessions devoted to the presentation and discussion of papers contributed by individual experts and by representatives of national and international organizations. Almost forty papers were submitted, most of which have been included in this volume. Session 1: Developing river and lake basins for sustained economic and social progress (four papers, by ECA, DTCD (Department of Technical Cooperation for Development, UN Secretariat), UNDP and UNEP). Session 2: Planning and management of river and lake basins (one paper on Africa, by F.H. Verhoog). Session 3: Development constraints. This session was largely devoted to case studies from Africa (amongst others on the Senegal River basin, the Lake Chad basin, the Logone River basin, Somalia, the Middle Niger basin). Session 4: Pointers to the future: five papers on various subjects (by Thayer Scudder, R. Hayton, and by DTCD, UNEP and ECA). |
