Abstract: | This paper is devoted to an annotated translation of the biographical notice of Mu.hammad Baghayogho (c. 1523-1594), a Dyula scholar of Jenne origin who spent the greater part of his life teaching in Timbuktu (Mali). This notice, written by Mu.hammad Baghayogho's pupil A.hmad B¯ab¯a (d. 1627), first appeared in 1596, and then in a slightly different form in 1603. To place the translation in its historical and intellectual context, a few words of introduction are included on Mu.hammad Baghayogho and his work and on the continuing scholarly and religious activities of the Baghayogho family.
