Abstract: | This paper clarifies the role that Lesotho's agricultural sector plays in the domestic economy and provides an example of the usefulness of social accounting matrices in development planning. The Lesotho example is used to show how a development plan which emphasizes integrating agricultural production into the domestic economy can yield greater economic stimulation and growth than a plan which emphasizes only agricultural production. In this particular case, strengthening the linkages between agricultural producers and other agents in the domestic economy is essential if increased agricultural production is to play an important role in the economic development of Lesotho.
