Abstract: | This study presents a picture of the magnitude and nature of external interventions in conflicts in Africa. During the period 1960-1985 there has been a minimum of 122 separate cases of African conflict in which external intervention occurred, excluding intervention in liberation struggles. The conflicts involving intervention included seventeen cases of civil disorder, four cases of mutiny, thirty-three coups d'état, thirty-one cases of insurgency, eleven civil wars, and twenty-six cases of inter-State conflict. The multitude of intervening actors included three supranational organizations, twenty-three extracontinental States and thirty-five African States. The geographical distribution of the conflicts is similarly widespread. Conflicts involving interventions have occurred in the vast majority of African States, with forty-five venues included in the listing. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
