Abstract:Somali oral poetry provides valuable insights into the political and social history of Somalia. The author briefly reviews studies of Somali poetry which were published in the period 1981-1986. The following studies are dealt with: 'Baaris ka fog siyaasad' ('Research far removed from politics', 1985) by Cali Sh. Axmed 'Mudiir' and Caadil Cusmaan Sheekh (concerned with the poems of Axmed Mahdi 'Gindhish', 1818-1905); 'Oral poetry and Somali nationalism: the case of Sayyid Ma.hammad 'Abdille .Hasan', 1982, by Said S. Samatar, and 'Ina Cabdille Xasan e sua attivitą letteraria' ('Ina Cabdille Xasan and his literary activity', 1984), by Yaasiin Cismaan Keenadiid (both concerned with the poetry of the Dervish War); 'Maansadii Timacadde' ('The poetry of Timacadde', 1983), by Boobe Yuusuf Ducaale (a collection of oral poetry by Cabdillaahi Suldaan 'Timacadde', 1920-1973), and 'Poesia orale somala: storia di una nazione' ('Somali oral poetry: the history of a nation', 1986), by F. Antinucci and Axmed Faarax Cali 'Idaajaa' (placing 26 poems composed in the period from 1920 to the present in their political and social setting) (both paying attention to Somali poetry since the Dervish War); 'Hoobaanta afka hooyo' ('The ripe fruit of the mother tongue', 1984), by Said Ahmed Warsame, and 'Dalkii udgoonaa: the land of spices', 1984, by Axmed Cartan Xaange, dealing with work songs and praise songs; and various studies on the Somali system of scansion and alliteration.
