Abstract:The Griquas once owned the richest portion of the earth's surface, namely where the Kimberley Diamond mines were found and the alluvial diamondiferous ground on both banks of the Vaal River, where diamonds were first discovered. Later they owned Griqualand East, and lost the fairest district in the whole of South Africa. In this volume will be described the life as it was lived by those sorely tried people, and how from being and independent state, claiming sovereign status, they eventually degenerated into landless poor, crying out for assistance to ward off the spectres of want and starvation (p.
