Abstract: | This paper presents a summary of the design and development of the Old Naledi Squatter Upgrading Project which was completed in Gaborone, Botswana, between 1976 and 1982. This project included the design and administration of land tenure and self-help housing programmes, the development of an ongoing community development programme, the upgrading of roads, storm drains, water supply, pit latrines and electricity, and the design and construction of new clinics, schools and markets. The paper closes by identifying a set of specific lessons which have been drawn from the completed project including its significance for future squatter upgrading and sites and services projects.
