Abstract:This paper examines the development of safari hunting as an economic activity in the SADCC countries. Experiences from a number of countries show that tourist trophy hunting can develop into a major economic factor. In the SADCC region, Zimbabwe and to a lesser extent Namibia have proven the economic potential of safari hunting. The paper pays attention to the revenues of sport hunting and its beneficiaries, the profitability and performance of hunting companies, management imperatives and government policies, and the politics of conservation and antihunting ideologies, which presently form the largest obstacle to hunting.
