Abstract: | Underdevelopment is seen as polarization. This proposition is followed by an overview of drought in Kenya and the human response to it. The next three chapters present detailed evidence from one study area in the Eastern Province that polarization has produced and is continuing to produce a heightened vulnerability to drought when super imposed onto a variable environment. It is argued that the ability of the peasant modes of production to respond creatively to the challenge of drought is being undermind by the influence of capitalism nationally, regionally, and locally. In the final chapter the author returns to the wider Kenyan context, where he considers the significance of the foregoing for an understanding of Kenyan society. Fourteen appendices, containing supporting evidence and clarifying discussion. |
