Abstract:This paper surveys a wide range of irrigation activities in the Lake Victoria Basin of Kenya. Information for this study was gathered during a visit to 12 irrigation projects in Busia, Siaya, Kisumu and South Nyanza districts of Western Kenya in 1987. Information is provided on two schemes supported by the NIB (National Irrigation Board): Bunyala Irrigation Scheme and West Kano Scheme; four projects by private voluntary groups, assisted by the PIU (Provincial Irrigation Unit): Ugambe and Nyandusi Women's Projects, Alungo Irrigation Project, Seka Bondo, and Maugo project; one project characterized by a combination of support (Rongo Nyagowa); and three projects initiated and operated privately and independently of any external support (Mbinda Estate, Kamuga to the west of Kendu Bay and Atandi Farm near Miti Mbili). Attention is paid to such topics as land tenure, farmers' organization, environmental and health conditions, investment of proceeds, production marketing, water apportionment and water conservation. An examination of the institutions involved - the NIB, PIU, Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), Kenya Freedom From Hunger Council (KFFHC) and various voluntary groups - is followed by an appraisal of their goals and achievements in terms of agricultural productivity, supply of food and nutrition, employment creation, skill development for irrigation, environmental impact, resolution of land tenure questions, and water utilization.
