Abstract:The textiles described in this book were excavated in the burial caves in the Dogon region of Mali in the 1960s and 1970s. They can be dated from the 11th to the 18th century and for the most part they can be regarded as the earliest textiles known from sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of the c. 500 garments or fragments of garments belong to the Tellem culture. The book consists of three parts. The first part contains a contribution on the archaeological context of the Tellem reasearch project by Rogier M.A. Bedaux, an introduction to weavers and dyers in West Africa by Renée Boser-Sarivaxévanis, and an introductory survey of the Tellem textiles by Rita Bolland. The second part is a catalogue of the Tellem textiles. The appendices which form the third part contain information on dyes and fibres (by J.H. Hofenk de Graaff), the conservation of the Tellem textiles (by C.J. van Nes), and a glossary.
