Abstract: | This paper discusses the role of small-scale industries in the southern Sudan. After an outline of industrial development in the southern Sudan since the end of the first civil war in 1972, and an overview of the characteristics of small-scale industries in underdeveloped countries, the author describes some rural industries which will be crucial for the postwar development of the southern Sudan. These include the production and repair of farm tools and equipment, the processing of agricultural products (including forestry products and fish), carpentry, and tailoring. Policy options for the promotion of these industries are indicated. |
