| Abstract: | This paper is based on a study carried out between August 1987 and April 1988 in six public enterprises in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective was to investigate the possible dimensions and causes of the 'A' syndrome - alienation, anomie and apathy - in Tanzania's labour relations. The author argues that, contrary to the expectations of many academicians and policymakers, changes in economic policies have not improved the workers' psychology about work and the crisis. On the contrary, the economic recovery programmes have increased the anxiety of workers because they have been accompanied by structural changes in labour groups, categories and incomes. The enterprises examined include three manufacturing firms, two institutions of higher learning, and a hotel. A total of 540 workers were interviewed and information was gathered on the impact of the economic crisis on labour (survival strategies among urban workers, new credit systems and forms of social security, expenditure patterns), the psychological and emotional consequences of economic hardship (worries about money and food, fear of inflation, exhaustion, psychological misplacement, withdrawal, changes in mannerisms), and the impact of the crisis and restructuring processes on internal labour structures (tertiarization or the formation of marginal groups of labour, deproletarianization, peasantization of labour).
