| Abstract: | This paper examines 'zafindraony', 'crossbreed' songs with a Christian text and a Malagasy tune, which have also spread among non-Christians in Madagascar. The focus is on the Betsileo, a region in the Centre-South. These songs have literally invaded the funeral vigils, but also accompany family evenings, collective festivals and even, in North Betsileo, journeys on the minibus and agricultural labour. However, they are absent from liturgy, being considered as folklore. These songs deserve to be studied on account of their music, their literary and theological contents, and on ethnographical grounds. In conclusion, the Malagasy text and English translation of a song the author heard in Betsileo during Easter night 1982 are presented, provided with a brief introduction. Notes, ref. |
