| Abstract: | Performance is central to African cinema, yet no area of African cinema has been as neglected as acting in published material on films from Africa. Although many African filmmakers are also actors or attended drama schools, and African actors and actresses are the subject of hundreds of articles in newspapers and magazines, the process of performance, as distinct from the product of performance, is rarely discussed. This essay briefly reviews some recent theoretical work on performance which is relevant for the study of African cinema, discusses some of the data available for the study of performance in African cinema, and suggests research that needs to be conducted in order to obtain an understanding of performance in African cinema as a cultural process. What are the influences of acting and theatre direction by African filmmakers on African cinema? How are local performance traditions related to African filmmaking? How do African performers perceive their roles in local performances and in films? How do audiences respond to local performance traditions included in films? What are the patterns of interaction among performers in African films? What is the relationship between performers' jobs and their acting? What are the differences in the influence of African and non-African film festivals, if any, on performance in African cinema? These are among the questions raised by the author.
