Abstract: | Any comprehensive model of staff development in universities in Africa has to take into account the university lecturer's or professor's role as a subject specialist, teaching and learning facilitator, researcher and publisher, consultant and guidance counsellor. Each attribute is developed in some detail in successive sections of this article, and interlinkages among the five role areas are discussed in the process of deriving a comprehensive model of staff development.
