| Abstract: | This collection of previously published essays addresses fundamental issues which have been repeatedly disregarded in disputes about education in South Africa. One such issue is the low reputation, even among students of education in South Africa, of the courses called philosophy of education. The essays develop a connected series of themes. A central theme is education as distinct from the particular historical intitutions and practices (schooling) established and maintained in its name. Another is the role culture and views about 'culture' play in the construction and defence of the apartheid State. The third theme is a critique of fundamental pedagogics, especially of its imperialistic claims in theory of education in South Africa. The fourth theme is an attempt to develop a view of democratic education - in relation to the concepts of accountability, autonomy, participation and critical thinking. The final theme is the nature and contribution of philosophy of education in a society which is characterized by radical political conflict. |
