Abstract: | The interlinkages between religion and politics in Southern Africa is a topical subject at a time when serious thought is being given to what a post-apartheid society will look like by academics from outside as well as by scholars and politicians within the liberation movement. This subject was explored at the third seminar jointly convened by the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies and the Nordic Institute of Missionary and Ecumenical Research (NIME) in Uppsala, Sweden, June 14-18, 1989. Material from that seminar has provided the source for this book. An introduction by Carl F. Hallencreutz is followed by five parts: 1) The Southern African scenarios (papers by Billy Modise, Lisbet Palme, Sheena Duncan, Axel Ivar Berglund, José Chipenda, Tor Sellström); 2) Religion, apartheid and after (papers by Desmond Tutu, Ephraim Mandivenga, Bengt Sundkler, Matthew Schoffeleers, Ove Gustafsson, Per Frostin); 3) Lessons from Zimbabwe (papers by Patrick Mutume, Paul Gundani, Carl F. Hallencreutz, Agnes Chepkwony Ongaro); 4) Contextualizing history (papers by Jeff Guy (on J.W. Colenso) and Alf Helgesson); 5) Concluding remarks by José Chipenda, and by Sigbert Axelson and Carl F. Hallencreutz. |
