Abstract:This work analyses the dynamism of nationalist ideologies, their underlying objectives, their impact on public policy choices, and the concept or forms of democracy (if any) that have been claimed or embodied in those ideological expressions in Burkina Faso, the Sudan, Togo and Zaire. It also makes some generalizations from these case studies about the future of nationalist ideologies and the struggle for democracy throughout Africa. The author discusses the correlations between national ideologies of the dominant social classes, that is to say, of States, the forms of democracy that they have generated, if any, and policy options that derived from them. While in the case of Burkina Faso and the Sudan the emphasis is more on democracy and nationalism, in Togo and Zaire, however, the concern is mainly on nationalism and policy.
