Abstract: | During the first 30 years of its existence, women were excluded from leadership functions in the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), the predecessor of the ANC. In 1941 it was decided that women 'be accorded the same status as men in the classification for membership'. This article examines the way women participated in the struggle against apartheid in the period from 1912 to 1941 and the nature of the relationship between women organizations such as the Bantu Women's League, the ANC Women's Section, and the National Council of African Women and the ANC.
