Abstract: | As the 30-year-old conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea seems to be reaching its end, Ethiopian and Eritrean political exiles as well as foreign academics and experts have been issuing proposals for a just and honourable solution to the conflict. Among these proposals, the federal option has been widely promoted. The purpose of this article is to prove that the federal solution is neither desirable nor feasible and, if imposed, will be unacceptable to the Eritrean population. Alternatively, it is proposed that the only way to achieve a durable and meaningful peace is to reorganize the Ethiopian polity on the basis of freedom of choice. This process must begin with the exercise of the right of self-determination by the people of Eritrea. Notes, ref. |
