Abstract: | Compared with racial oppression, gender oppression has been, and continues to be, an issue of secondary or little importance in the political life of South Africans. This paper focuses on the role of the law in maintaining and reproducing the oppression of women in South Africa. The authors look at some of the legislation affecting the status of women in society: the granting of franchise and the laws governing marriage and sexual offences. They also discuss some of the debates around specific laws in order to expose the variety of attitudes to women and their oppression in South Africa. The authors begin with a discussion of gender stereotypes and of the ways in which sexism and racism interact. Bibliogr. |
