Abstract: | Shift work in South Africa imposes a third layer of burden on women who are already oppressed by the double shift of work at the factory and then at home. This article discusses some of the effects, especially the social ones, of shift work on women, drawing on studies of shift work done in the tyre and rubber, textile and laundry industries. After a short review of women and shift work legislation in South Africa, the article discusses the effect of shift work on domestic relationships, on children's education, and on personal relationships.
