Abstract: | The composition of the urban and rural labour force remains a much discussed though little researched topic in South Africa. The authors contend that the focus of many works on the macroscale obfuscates the differences within the black population as a whole. More specifically, they argue that opportunities to gain access to the job market, and to secure employment are closely linked to physical location and gender, and that these factors are themselves interlocked. This article first outlines the theory of a segmented labour market and the differentiation of the labour force. Then it presents a preliminary analysis of the social and economic differentiation that presently structures the black labour force in KwaZulu, Natal. It presents information on income levels in the sample areas, activities of the potential labour force, gender stratification and differentiation, and differentiation of the economically active men and women.
