Abstract: | Since the beginning of European contacts with the interior of East Africa, mention has been made of hunter-gatherers, known as 'Dorobo'. In the historical literature, however, they have been inadequately dealt with, partly because of misconceived notions about them. This article first surveys some of the literature concerning the hunter-gatherers of East Africa in order to see how ideas about them have developed. Then it identifies and delineates the various groups of hunter-gatherers who lived and are still living in the area. Finally, the largest remaining community of hunter-gatherers, the Kalenjin-speaking Okiek living in the western highlands of Kenya, is looked at in more detail, paying special attention to their socioeconomic history.
