Abstract:This book is the outcome of an international conference held in Nairobi in 1986, organized jointly by the African Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy of Sciences, and the Third World Academy of Sciences. The conference focused on drought, desertification, and food deficits in Africa, particularly the Sahel and Eastern Africa. It highlighted such issues as soil and water conservation and management, the environmental changes that adversely affect food production in Africa, and the domestic policies that exacerbate this food crisis. There was unanimous agreement that development in Africa hinges primarily on the continent's capacity to master its environment for self-sufficient food production. The book contains the opening statement and a statement of the problem by Thomas R. Odhiambo, and contributions by Michael Dow, Caleb O. Othieno (on the development of the Kenya tea industry), Yvon R. Dommergues, R. Lal, John C. Tothill, Bede N. Okigbo, and Saydil M. Toure.
