| Abstract: | In the light of Malawi's increased agricultural intensification through increased use of improved technologies such as fertilizers, ox ploughs, ridgers, etc., the importance of stores management cannot be overemphasized. This paper presents some technical issues related to stores management in Malawi, particularly with reference to the storage of grains and materials for farm use. First, a description is given of traditional stores, the Nkhokwe (grain store) and the Chikwa (groundnut or bean store). These stores are constructed from local materials. A number of efforts have been made in the recent past to improve the traditional Nkhokwe to accommodate all types of maize varieties and reduce the loss during storage due to insect attacks, rodents and moulding. Next, traditional storage management is discussed. Traditional farmholders know roughly the quantity of their stock. However, to meet the international standards of the export market, Malawi is required to export good quality goods. This calls for modernized stores and warehouses, proper methods of record keeping, and better materials handling systems to ensure a smooth operation. Recommendations for improved storage management conclude the article. Bibliogr. |
