Abstract:Based on research carried out in 1972-1973, the author describes the position of women among the Banyankore of Ankole District, in the Western Region of Uganda. In the first part of the article, he describes the position of Nkole women from birth, in a traditional home, to the time of marriage. He also deals with the period when women were influential in society, to the extent of sometimes advising kings. Murogo, Nyabuzaana, Kishokye and Julia Kibubura were among the women who were renowned for their role as diviners, and the author looks at each of them separately. He also mentions women such as Florence Njangali, Perpetua Gihanga and Mabel Katahweire who, in the Christian era, have emerged as leaders in the Church. A Christian analysis and interpretation of matters relating to women follows in part 2. Here the author deals with the position of Nyankore women as a whole, inheritance, sexual intercourse, choice of a partner, divorce and polygamy, and women in leadership, from both a traditional African point of view and a Biblical, historical and theological viewpoint. Lastly, in part 3, the author suggests ways in which the Church should approach issues concerning women such as the equality of the sexes, leadership, sexual intercourse, inheritance, divorce, bride price, mass media and literature.
