Abstract: | After outlining the basic parameters of the two-gap model - a conceptual model developed by UNIDO for determining borrowing from the debtor country's perspective, in which the two-gap consists of the gap between investment and savings (the savings gap), on the one hand, and that between imports and exports (the trade gap), on the other - the author applies the model to Kenya's economic performance from the mid-1960s onwards and analyses data on industrial exports from Kenya in the light of internal and external factors that affect the country's export performance. Expansion and diversification of Kenya's export base are essential if the industrial sector is to achieve the target growth rate of 7.5 percent per annum for the period 1981-2000, as stipulated in Sessional paper no. 1 (1986).
