| Abstract: | This article reports on evidence gathered from a selected group of form 2 (junior school) students in 7 schools in Harare and Mashonaland East regions of Zimbabwe. The students participated in a reading literacy test which was part of a pilot study that was carried out from September to November, 1989. The students read comprehensive passages and answered questions on them which were mostly of the multiple-choice type. Only in four passages was an open-ended question given. On the whole, students performed well. They performed best on those questions requiring a literal level of understanding. They performed less well on questions requiring interpretative and evaluative skills, and worst on the open-ended questions. Bibliogr. |
