Abstract: | The major goal of Tanzania's natural resources management and planning is to increase productivity in all sectors of the national economy. The chosen strategy of development planning soon after independence was that of collective ownership and the participation of the population in decisionmaking. After the Arusha Declaration of 1967, 'ujaama' villagization became the vehicle for the mobilization of resources. However, the results have stayed behind the initial expectations. This paper assesses Tanzania's natural resources management, in particular the management of land and population resources, water resources, forest resources, and the preservation of wildlife.
