Abstract: | This article deals with the 'ikenga' symbol which the Igbo of Nigeria associate with achievement and success, both in individual and group matters. It first gives some ethnographic details on the symbol and a typology of 'ikenga' ritual objects, which range from loose material representations to elaborately carved objects with human features up to six feet in height. Then it describes the pattern of distribution of 'ikenga' in Igboland, the symbolism of 'ikenga' and its functions, the ceremony involved in the commissioning of a new 'ikenga' object, and 'ikenga' rituals, particularly the annual festival which is devoted to all categories of 'ikenga'. The author carried out a field study in Igboland in 1983-1984 and witnessed an annual 'ikenga' celebration in Ezi-Agulu Aguleri in October 1983. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
